After last week's cliffhanger of an ending, i honestly could not wait to see this week's episode of Dexter - in fact i spent a fair portion of the day cursing my stupid internet for playing up on me. I had so many questions and theories running through my head about what could possibly happen - and after watching this week's episode, i was surprised in many ways. Not just with the outcome of Lumen's character, but the resulting outcomes of other main characters, such as Quinn, Deb and most of all, Dexter.
But i'll get back to that in a moment.
This season has proven to be quite a turbulent yet carefully structured season, and for that i give the writers my congratulations. Looking back on previous seasons, it is evident that the writers have a relatively good track history at keeping a season structurally sound (with the exception of the Season 3 finale), but all in all, i believe that this season might have been the most organised of them all.
5.1 dealt completely with the aftermath of Rita's death, and so opened as a prologue to the season, while 5.2 and 5.3 took care of some major loose ends from the previous seasons, while setting up the beginning of this season as a whole. 5.4 - 5.6 dealt with Lumen and Dexter's newfound and awkward acquaintance. 5.7 and 5.8 were both in a way the 'tie in' episodes of the season, bringing everything together and tidying up the earlier half of the season. 5.9 and 5.10 dealt with tying up the loose ends of the rapists' storyline, 5.11 wrapped up the Liddy storyline, and 5.12 brought everything home in a nice neat package.
Overall, i was very, very impressed with how much effort was put into the careful structuring of this season, and it clearly showed favourably towards viewers, with the Season 5 finale being on par with the Season 4 finale in ratings.
Now, for the final synopsis of the season.
This episode dealt with several important storylines - the first of which was Dexter looking for Jordan and Lumen. After spending about a quarter of the episode looking for the location, Dexter finally manages to find Jordan, but ends up getting captured by him. With Dexter and Lumen tied together in the same room, Jordan gloats about his successful capture of the two of them, while at the same time admiring Dexter's collection of knives. However, the one fatal mistake he made was turning his back on two serial killers, as Dexter manages to pull out a hidden knife from his shoe and stabs Jordan in the foot and promptly knocks him out.
During this time, Deb recieves a call from a witness who saw Jordan Chase heading towards a campsite and what sounded like thumps coming from his trunk. Deb heads over to the campsite, and starts looking around.
Meanwhile, with Jordan Chase tied up, Dexter tells Lumen that she can kill him if she wants, leading to Jordan Chase bursting out saying, 'there's no ettiqute to what you're doing. Killing is killing Dexter.' After yelling at Lumen and attempting to drive her crazy, she jumps the gun so to speak and stabs Jordan full on in the chest, killing him instantly.
As Dexter and Lumen clean up, Deb enters the room and sees Jordan's dead body tied up on the table. Telling the vigilantes to freeze, Dexter and Lumen stop, fearing full discovery. Luckily for them, a big sheet of plastic stands in the way between them, so Deb can't actually see their faces. After giving in to her emotions, Deb tells them that the police will be there in an hour, and warns them to be out of there by then. She then leaves in what could arguably be one of the most controversial scenes in the show's history. I mean, c'mon, she was so damn close!
While all this is happening, Quinn is dealing with the aftermath of Liddy's discovery in the back of the van. Aside from evidence incriminating him, such as the phone calls, LaGuerta also sees blood on Quinn's shoe, which as we all know, is Liddy's. However, just when everything seems done for Quinn, Dexter decides to let Quinn off the hook, so to speak and falsifies the blood sample. Looks like Quinn is going to stick around...for now.
Additionally, Batista and LaGuerta's relationship seems back on track again at last, with the pair making up during the episode and returning to a happy ending for the couple. Let's hope next season, we get some more interesting scenarios in their relationship storyline.
Finally, we come to the last scene of the season. After Lumen tells Dexter that her Dark Passenger has left, she leaves and returns home to Minnesota leaving Dexter emotionally crushed, but understanding. With a new outlook on life and his guilt towards Rita's death now somewhat sated, Dexter and the rest of the family and friends celebrate Harrison's first birthday in a beautiful scene on the beach.

All in all, Season 5 was quite a thrilling season, and definitely lived up to Season 4's epic cliffhanger of an ending. Now with a ten month wait until September next year, the writers and producers have quite a daunting task ahead of them in making Season 6 of an already great show. Let's hope Season 6 lives up to our expectations.
